Writers Guild Strike - Part Deux
I've spoken to many people about the strikes and i wonder to myself why do i feel so affected about the strikes , especially when i'm in a completely different continent from where the strikes are happening .
Ethics . That's what it is . Are the TV corporations so blase about the writers for their shows ? The stakeholder theory would sum up everything . The writers , producers , actors , viewers , administrative staff . Everyone involved in the production of the show gets affected . I was watching the green week programmes on NBC and i was just ballistic at how they can be hypocritical and call themselves earth-friendly but not ever bothering to care but this issue . Al Gore & Leonardo Dicaprio made supporting the earth all sexy and hip again, but i'm sure to them , it's just PR ploy .
It has been estimated that, if the networks give into the demands of the WGA , it will cost them only about 10 million compared to the kazillion of the dollars the networks pull in collectively. The writers are not making unrealistic demands , the residuals are important for the writers to make ends meet . I guess what i'm saying , is that the reason why i'm affected is because i'm supporting the talented underdogs with a real cause .
Also, it's because i'm a writer (sorta) , that i feel extremely annoyed . How many times have you sat in front of your computer , trying to write that paper , trying to write that article , brainstorming for that brilliant word to come to you. Not easy is it ? The creative process is never easy and these writers are the brains behind some of the most intelligent shows on the television. The drama from Grey's Anatomy , the laughs from How i Met your Mother and the list goes on . So in some way , i feel for them .
So .. damn these corporations .
If you are still in dark about what they are fighting about . Watch this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ55Ir2jCxk
