In Sense and Sensibility , we are given a good understanding of the folly and danger of sensibility when it is excessive or perverted. Sense is oftern shown to be necessary as a counteracting force to curb the damange done by an inappropriate display of sensibility. Yet, to assume that Jane Austen prioritises sense above sensibility just beacause of this is to be mistaken about her stand on sense. It must be recognised that in the novel, she has also demostrated actively how sense, if it exercised in exclusion of sensibility, can result in the destabilising of personal and social order. In this essay , it will be contended that while Jane Austen champions the use of sense of counter the excesses or perversion of sensibility, she does not priortise sense above sensibility, as shown by her portrayal of the misue and abuse of sense be characters deprived of sensbitility. In fact, through the potrayal of certain characters in the novel, she affirms the constructive value os sensibility and reveals the necessity for it. Ultimately , what Austen really advocates is the striking of a good balance of sense and sensibility in order to be a victor in the Augustan society .
