Why SMU is closing down ( or at least SESS )

When zhuang mentioned that he feels that school is going to close down, i laughed , but when you think about it, it's kinda true. You know when a building is closing down when everyone starts to jump ship . This seems to be precisely the situation right now .

We have imaginary modules with no proper professors to teach them and our current professors seem to be either quitting, taking a hiatus or losing that passion to teach. So far , i've heard that 2 professors have quit and our dear riccardo is disappearing for a term and it seems that tobias is going to teach democracy . The horrors . The professors are leaving too fast to be replaced and if things aren't bad enough , there seem to be no one teaching the higher level modules . The students are at the mercy of the courses opened by the school which effectively leaves the students with no choice . How all this work out in the next few years completely baffles me. Are there even any full fledged social science professors in school ? I have no idea . Did i also mention shitty professors/lecturers ? i don't even think my calculus lecturer speaks english. I mean , if they subject us to an english proficiency test , i think they should do the same for the people they hire.

The school is also falling apart . Ever notice how the school is always under renovation . The escalators break down , cracks on the wall appear, dustbins disappear and the school is getting dirtier by the day . The gradual erosion of the school's infrastructure signals that we are indeed shutting downn in due time . The few small repairs are just there to buy time and prevent that eventual collapse . Not literally , but a collapse of the beautiful facade of the school and our new city campus becomes a shithole .

I think it's a case of how the school is promising all these things but they are just not substantiated or backed by proper documentation ( ahh , the things we learn ) . I personally think that the track programme is full of shit . you randomly take a bunch of crap modules and viola , a fanciful sounding track like analysis , development and policy analysis . or something shit like that . Like seriously . It sounds as arbitrary as anything .

With each increasing year , the intake gets bigger and bigger and you have the same profs who have teaching the same crap module since the beginning of time and they have to teach it more , now and again . i don't even want to imagine what it is like teaching understanding societies like 6 times . I think i'll commit fatalistic suicide . i don't even understand how some profs can teach LTB over and over again , it's the most cock module on earth . Right after the equally pointless CT and mind boggling AS . The holy trinity of crappy modules .

Sooner or later , all the promises that have been told to us will be slowly uncovered as tall tales and the demands of the students will be too large to deal with and the bottom will fall out , only . that is really doesn't because we are at an disadvantage because no one is going to blow the whistle and call bluff .

We have little or no real actions to take . We can only argue with the faculty and demand for more professors, but again , it is up to the administration to act on it. As of now , their time buying tactics are getting stale and they ought to step up their game before the thing blows up in their face . Fact is , you don't mess with SMU students , we have been trained to morph into major bitches and are all apt at playing the politicking game . In this debate of student vs administration , the administration better work harder for their money .
